Frequently Asked
Questions
What Should I Expect During My First Class?
During the first part of the class, you will run through the warm-up, including stretching, core work, and movement drills. After this part, the instructor(s) will then demonstrate the technique of the day. After the demonstration, you will be partnered with another student in the class so you can drill this technique. For the last part of the class, you will take part in ‘“rolling,” this is the time for grappling, also known as sparring. But, if you don’t feel ready, you don’t have to take part in the rolling on your first day. For the class, you will usually be partnered up with a student who is more experienced than you so that you have someone to help guide you through the rolling process.
I'm a Woman: Is bJJ right for me?
Yes, absolutely! Jiu-Jitsu is not only a fantastic choice for your overall mental and physical fitness, but it’s also a great way to help you learn about self-defense and feel a sense of community and belonging – all of which are lacking in a lot of other sports and exercise classes. Learning and improving your self-defensive skills is always important, especially as a woman; you will be outdone in both size and strength by most “opponents.” Still, jiu-jitsu is the perfect way to train specific techniques and methods to fill that gap, giving you the upper hand no matter your size.
As well as being a top self-defense option, the jiu-jitsu community as a whole is spread far and wide and continually growing. This community is a place for people to share their passion, help each other train, and support their classmates. You’ll also find that, unlike other martial arts, jiu-jitsu is not about overly aggressive attack methods – you won’t need to be kicking or punching people with the goal to knock them out. Rather, jiu-jitsu is a far more smooth and fluid martial art, being graceful instead of aggressive, which is a great way to challenge you mentally and physically.
As a company, we are actively trying to change the unbalanced ratio of men to women in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, with the number of men far outweighing women in this sport. To help encourage more women to participate and restore some balance, we offer a 10% discount to all female-identifying individuals on all commitment memberships.
would BJJ benefit my child?
Yes! Like with all sports or martial arts, training and consistency is the key. So, regardless of your child’s strength, size, or even coordination, with consistency, they can easily excel in jiu-jitsu. Taking part in and training in American jiu-jitsu is a fun, interactive, and highly engaging activity that your little ones and older ones will love! We work with kids ranging from age 4 to age 15, and they all love the training in equal measure and work hard at improving their reflexes, balance, flexibility, and coordination.
As well as the physical benefits, your kid(s) can also benefit from other sight-after traits that come with martial arts, such as patience, resilience, discipline, work ethic, and a great self-esteem boost. Our kids’ curriculum, created by one of our many expert coaches, places extra emphasis on rewards for effort and engagement and never utilizes negative points or punishments.
is there an age limit for BJJ classes?
No, we have no age limit for our AJJ classes! We have all ages from 4 years old all the way up to 70 years old. Our classes are catered to the age group, so we have something to suit everyone.
What is the basic ediquette while inside the gym?
- Shoes OFF while on the mat, ON while off the mat
- No egos! Leave that with your shoes off to the side
- Gis must be washed and cleaned for class
- If you attend more than one class in a day, a fresh gi must be worn each class
- Respect your training partners
- Respect your instructors
- Respect your body
Training jiu-jitsu is not about proving your ability, it’s not about being best in class, and it’s certainly not about using your strength to dominate other students – we will ask you to leave if you engage in any of this type of behavior.
what do i wear/ bring to my first class?
For your first class, it’s always a good idea to arrive fifteen minutes early if possible, so you have enough time to meet your trainer and other staff, sign a waiver, and get settled in with our space. We recommend wearing comfortable exercise clothes and comfortable footwear that is easy to take on and off – sandals are a popular option. Don’t forget to bring your gi, or you can rent/buy one from us if you don’t have one yet. For a no-gi class, a rashguard and shorts should be worn. We also have a filtered water station, but you should also bring your own water bottle that you can refill.
I'm not sure that Checkmat murrieta exclusive will be right for me. can i try a class before signing up?
Yes! Locals in the San Diego area are welcome to take advantage of a FREE week trial. A week will give you more than enough time to get to know our instructors, training methods, culture, and facilities before committing to our services. Additionally, if you’ve never done jiu-jitsu before, you can take part in a 30-minute introductory class for free. No pressure, no uniforms – just a fun class to get you comfortable with a few basic moves. If you’re a blue-belt or higher, you can drop in a single class for a flat-rate fee or drop in for a whole day and take every class available just because you can!
Do I have to be in shape to start BJJ?
No. We understand this is one of people’s main concerns, but there is no need to worry about it. Our classes for beginners are the perfect way to start your journey with us and build up your fitness levels and physical condition.
is BJJ good exercise?
There are few better workouts you can have than with training Brazilian jiu-jitsu. You can tone your body, improve your fitness, reduce body fat, increase cardiovascular capacity and muscle endurance, and improve your balance and coordination, all while having fun!
